JOB POSTING: LEAD FABRICATOR
Position Summary
Bad Monkey Props is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Fabricator to join our shop team. This role is primarily hands-on and requires advanced expertise in carpentry, MIG/TIG welding, and project execution.
The Lead Fabricator works closely with project management to determine fabrication approaches and practical solutions based on the needs of each project. This position will play a key role in maintaining the high standards of craftsmanship and professionalism that define our work.
The ideal candidate will also have experience in additional fabrication disciplines such as CNC operation, Laminate finish application, and Pneumatic actuator systems, and will demonstrate an interest in continuing to learn and grow within a multi-disciplinary fabrication environment.
Primary Responsibilities
Execute high-quality prop builds using a wide range of materials and fabrication methods
Collaborate with project managers and shop staff to determine build strategies and fabrication solutions
Interpret project drawings and build plans to produce accurate and durable finished work
Lead assigned projects through fabrication and finishing phases while maintaining production timelines
Troubleshoot technical challenges through creative problem-solving and collaboration
Estimate material needs and communicate supply requirements to project management
Occasionally oversee and coordinate small teams of overhire labor (typically 1–4 people) as assigned
Sustain a safe and orderly work environment by regularly cleaning, maintaining, and organizing tools and equipment.
Assist with shop inventory awareness and coordinate restocking needs with shop leadership
Occasionally open and close the shop during normal business hours
Uphold Bad Monkey Props standards of craftsmanship, professionalism, and quality control
Required Qualifications
Proven experience as a lead fabricator, carpenter, or prop builder in a professional fabrication environment
Advanced carpentry skills and strong knowledge of tools, materials, and construction methods
Proficiency in steel and aluminum MIG welding
Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and build documentation
Strong communication skills and the ability to work collaboratively with project management
Detail-oriented approach with a focus on precision, durability, and clean finishing
Ability to work independently while supporting a team-based shop environment
Ability to lift/maneuver 70lbs (Singel ¾ sheet plywood)
Preferred Skills and Experience
Experience in any of the following areas is strongly preferred:
TIG welding
CNC operation
Joinery and advanced woodworking techniques
Laminate finish application
Pneumatic actuator systems
Practical prop lighting and low-voltage electrical integration
Foam fabrication
Familiarity with Broadway/theatrical production standards

Schedule
Standard shop hours are 9:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Monday through Friday
Optional Saturdays may be available or required depending on production workload and deadlines
Compensation
$45 per hour
Overtime begins after 40 hours per week
Overtime is paid at 1.5x hourly rate
Payroll is processed weekly (Monday–Saturday pay period) and issued on Thursdays
